Procedures Involved In Treating Receding Gums

By Deborah Price

Most people tend only to visit their dentist when they have tooth aches. Sometimes the gum starts to pull away from the tooth exposing the tooth root. Some people do not notice because the process may be gradual. In such cases they will need to consult a dentist to work on treating receding gums because if not treated the teeth and bone structure will be destroyed.

There are a number of things responsible for the recession. Gum disease and bacterial diseases are one of the most common reasons. Another cause may be genetic susceptibility . It has been noted that a significant number of people are naturally more prone to gum disease than others. Brushing your teeth in the wrong way or too roughly rubs the gum exposing it to bacteria.

Hormonal changes in women around puberty and pregnancy can also make the gums sensitive and vulnerable to gum recession. Tobacco users are more likely to have sticky plaque on their teeth that can contribute to the problem. Tooth grinding and clenching puts a lot of strain on the teeth and can also be related.

Mild cases of recession can be handled by visiting a dentist. A procedure called deep cleaning is conducted. Here a dentist removes the plaque that has accumulated on your teeth and evens out the area near the root to ensure bacteria cannot reattach. They may also give some antibiotics to prevent bacterial infections.

In cases of severe recession the dentist will consult with a periodontist to determine how best to treat it . Pocket depth reduction is one of procedures used. It aims at reducing or eliminating the depth of the pockets. The affected gum tissue is folded back and cleaned to remove bacteria. It is then reattached to the tooth root.

In most cases the body regenerates worn out tissue but sometimes it needs to be induced. The periodontist will peel back the affected gum tissue and clean the area just like in pocket depth reduction. They will then apply a regenerative material to the area to induce natural ability of body to regenerate tissues.

Tissue grafting may also be an option. The most common is a connective tissue graft when skin from under the flap of your move is cut and tissue is extracted this is then bound to the gum surrounding the affected area. In cases where the damage is not severe tissue form the area near the tooth can be used for the graft, this is a pedicle graft.

This problem can be avoided by simply brushing and flossing every day, visiting your dentist regularly, quitting smoking and maintaining a healthy diet. This way you save yourself the pain and the money used to pay for the procedures.
