Can You Still Work At Home In Your Pajamas In Medical Billing?

By Gary Boozani

Many medical coding colleges, universities and software companies will try to sell you a dream. They often tell prospective billers that they can work at home in their pajamas while doing medical billing. Don't believe the hype. Medical doctors today often prefer working with medical billing companies and not individuals. In the 1980's, many billers did work from home. Getting clients was rather easy because certification was easy to get and you did not have to know ICD-10. Today, ICD-10 has a lot of men and women scratching their heads. They are asking themselves if they can handle the new coding system. It is a hard fact to wake up to everyday.

For starters, healthcare is becoming a highly complex system and few people have actually figure it out. Doctors are losing money because medical billers are not skilled enough to work with codes and insurance companies. It takes a person with lots of experience to understand ICD-10. If ICD-10 is foreign to you, it can take years to learn. Today, healthcare providers are hiring medical billing companies to represent them. They want their billing done by experts that can get them higher returns.

Many medical billers that work from home had to work extra hard to get a client. Most medical establishments don't want to waste time thinking about you or what you are all about. It is important to know that billing takes time and effort. It requires a great deal of skill when it comes to putting together a lot of packages for your clients. If you require extra training or education, then its best to get it.

In my personal opinion, having a stay at home job is good if you have another source of income. If one business is doing bad, you have another business to back it up. It's important to understand how this all works. In order to have a job with a reputable company, you should have a master's degree in medical billing. I say this because there are many people wanting to become a medical biller.

If you work from home, then its best to get dressed every day. You don't want your client to think that you are lazy and doing their billing poorly. You should feel happy to get up in the morning and get to work. Get dressed and don't look sloppy. You never know when a potential client can come walking through your door. It takes a lot of time and effort to get a client to come to you. It is important to make this happen for yourself. In time, you will come to realize that coding takes time and effort. As each day passes, you will come to realize that working in the industry is extremely lucrative. Depending on how good you are will determine your pay. There are some billers earning a six figure income and others earning only $30,000 per year. It takes a person of a strong mind to get a business to a higher level. Everything takes time and a lot of patience.
